In STD/HIV prevention it is all about brief behavioral interventions
these days. Brief interventions, particularly those using mass media, are the
ones that have the greatest chance of being brought to scale, i.e., reaching
significant number s of persons at risk at a cost that allows for
sustainability in times of dwindling public health resources. Training the STD clinical workforce is basically
also a behavioral intervention for which the same principles apply. Brevity in
this area is needed even more since STD clinicians are increasingly
overburdened and cannot take the time to attend multiple-day courses.
Case studies have
always been a very popular and effective way of training and can easily be
formatted into computer-based or online presentations that can be easily
accessed by clinicians on computers at work or at home. With the “5-Minute Case
Study” we hope to fill a need for brief training sessions that enhance STD
clinical knowledge and hopefully lead to discussion among colleagues both in
the clinical setting and online on STDPO.
We welcome feedback and questions as posts to this resource, or if you would
rather provide your comments more privately, send an email to iscoe@dhha.org. We also very much welcome
ideas or uploads of new case studies and we will be happy to assist you with
preparing your own.
Case studies are comprised of two files; the first file is a
PowerPoint file that contains the case study and includes a number of questions
regarding the case. The second file is a
PDF that provides answers to the questions as well as the rationale for these
answers. You are free to use the slides
in the PowerPoint file for educational purposes as long as credit is given to
the author as specified on the last slide of the slide set.
Enjoy!
